The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) in Northern Mindanao on Friday launched the "trash trap" project to reduce floating garbage in two barangays.

DENR-10 Executive Director Henry Adornado identified the villages of Lapasan and Puntod as the two pilot areas for the PHP 500,000 project in the region.

He also stated that an additional PHP 100,000 from the fund was given to the project managers in the two villages.

The DENR will monitor the projects, according to Adornado, while the barangays will manage them.

Trash traps, which are installed in creeks and waterways, aim to reduce floating garbage in the city, resulting in fewer incidents of urban flooding.

Forester Mercidita Barbarona, DENR-10 assistant chief for conservation and development, said the trash trap is a first for the city, thanks to Adornado, who modeled the successful project in Quezon province.

Meanwhile, Armen Cuenca, the chief of the city's environment and natural resources office (Clenro), has committed to funding the project's implementation in the city's 80 villages.

Cuenca stated that the city government has already allocated funds for the trash trap's citywide implementation this year.

The Clenro office in the pilot villages confirmed that it will buy trash from the traps through its "Trash to Cash" program.

It was also announced that the city government had built a recycling facility to densify plastic waste.
