PHIVOLCS observes increased 'degassing' activity at Kanlaon Volcano
by Mary Antalan12 September 2024

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) observed heightened degassing activity at Kanlaon Volcano on September 10 and 11.

This increase in unrest has been accompanied by volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquake swarms and unusually high levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions recorded on Tuesday.

PHIVOLCS continues to maintain Alert Level 2 over Kanlaon, indicating moderate volcanic unrest. Under this alert level, the public is advised to avoid entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

As a precaution, an evacuation center has been recommended in Kanlaon City, as it lies within the PDZ, along with nearby areas.

"May mga areas sa La Castellana na pasok sa Permanent Danger Zonze, apat na barangay 'yan. They [people] are not supposed to be there in the first place," PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolol said during an interview on Magandang Umaga Pilipinas on Thursday.

"Ang inaabangan natin kapag magkaroon ng stronger earthquake, ground swelling, pwedeng magkaroon ng magma explosion or lava flow."

Kanlaon Volcano's last magmatic eruption was in 1902.
