Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla mentioned on Wednesday, Nov. 14, that there is a huge chance that former Senator Leila de Lima will be acquitted in her last drug case following the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court’s (RTC) decision to grant her bail petition.
In a televised interview, Remulla said that it is a strong statement when the prosecution is unable to fulfill the burden of proof that is necessary to keep her in detention.
The Justice Secretary said that the momentum is very much in favor of the defense since the RTC allowed De Lima to post bail, noting that the drug case is non-bailable.
Moreover, Remulla explained that they cannot interfere with the prosecution’s decision, saying that if everything is micromanaged as the prosecution did throughout the country, nothing will be left to manage.
He added that he leaves the decision to the panel of prosecutors who are taking care of the case if they want to further ask for the granting of bail to respect institutional continuity.
