The camp of former Senator Leila de Lima is planning to petition for a writ of habeas corpus after being in prison for almost 6 years.
This was after the former Chief-of-Staff of Juan Ponce Enrile, Jessica “Gigi” Reyes, filed the same petition and was granted of temporary liberty by the Supreme Court.
Lawyers of De Lima are studying whether to follow the same legal steps as they were facing similar cases of graft and plunder.
"Tinitingnan po namin 'yung applicability nito o kaya 'yung similarity ng naging kaso ni Sen. Leila de Lima," De Lima's lawyer Atty. Bonifacio Tacardon said in an interview.
Another legal counsel of the former senator has shared hope for their pending bail motion to be granted.
"Sana naman, lahat kagaya ni Atty. Gigi Reyes, saka ni even former Senator Juan Ponce Enrile because we have to remember that Senator Juan Ponce Enrile was granted bail as well as humanitarian reasons and he’s not a flight risk," said the lawyer.
De Lima has been in jail since 2017 for allegedly taking part in the illegal drug trade.
Habeas corpus is a legal action where an 'arrested person be brought before a judge or court before being detained or imprisoned'.
