The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Thursday set a suggested retail price (SRP) for medium red onions amid the reports of surging onion prices in several wet markets.
Under Administrative Circular no. 12 signed by DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban, the retail price for medium red onions is now at Php 250 per kilogram.
This is higher as compared to the SRP of Php 170 per kilo that DA set in October.
DA said the new SRP was issued to "not aggravate the current difficulties of Filipino people affected by the pandemic and rising fuel prices.”
The SRP will be effective until 1st week of January 2023, subject to stakeholders' consultation, the order stated.
According to the agriculture department's price monitoring as of Dec. 29, the price of red onions in Metro Manila averaged Php 540 to 700 per kilo.
Meanwhile, the price of local white onion is Php 600 per kilo.
