Cybercrime cases are on the rise for the first quarter of 2024 as the Philippine National Police (PNP)’s Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) recorded a 21.84% surge which translates to 4,469 incidents.

According to PNP-ACG, the three common cybercrime incidents were online selling scams, debit/credit card fraud, and investment scams.

“The increasing reliance on online platforms for shopping, financial transactions, and investment opportunities has created a larger pool of potential targets for cybercriminals,” Maj. Gen. Sidney Hernia, ACG director, said in a statement.

Hernia noted that the crime increase is rooted in factors such as increased online activity, cybercriminals’ sophisticated tactics, and lack of awareness.

“As cybercriminals continuously refine their tactics, there is a pressing need for individuals to educate themselves about cybercrimes,” he added.
