The culinary icon and celebrated Filipino chef, Margarita “Gaita” Forés, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, her son, Amado, announced the news on his Instagram account. She was 64.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés,” he wrote in the caption.
“Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time,” he added.

Margarita had a remarkable 38-year career in the culinary world, where she extended her expertise and knowledge to uplift Filipino heritage and cuisines on the global stage. The chef began her journey in catering and eventually expanded her reach by launching several restaurants.
She founded the fine dining catering enterprise, Cibo di Marghi. However, apart from her restaurant chains, Margarita also played a big role in elevating Filipino cuisine.
Her culinary restaurants stretched beyond this, reaching far towards artisanal food products and collaborations with international brands. In 2016, she was named Asia’s Best Female Chef, as part of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
A true advocate for Filipino cuisine, Margarita worked closely with local farmers to help promote their products.
Although the chef has passed, her influence and legacy will continue to live on and inspire countless chefs and food enthusiasts.
