The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that the crime rates in the country have declined to 8.80% or 2,514 cases in 2023.

Based on Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management's Crime Research Analysis Center (CRAC), index crime volume declined from 28,558 cases in 2022 to 26,044 cases in 2023.

The top three most prevalent crimes for both years such as rape, theft, and physical injury remained consistent.

The data for comparative insights was taken from January 1 to September 5 of 2022 and 2023.

Crimes such as murder, physical injury, rape, robbery, theft, and carnapping decreased in number, registering a drop of 8.79% in focus crimes.

Meanwhile, homicide cases showed an uptrend of 0.42% in 2023.

"I am pleased to see the continuing positive trends in our crime statistics. The decrease in crime rates reflects the hard work and dedication of our officers and the effectiveness of our police interventions and strategies," said PNP Chief PGen. Benjamin Acorda Jr.

He said the PNP "will not become complacent" and "will continue to strive for even greater peace and security for the Filipino people."

As the holiday season approaches, Acorda has given orders to all the regional directors to step up their anti-crime efforts in order to halt the rise in street crimes.

"The PNP's commitment to improving peace and order in the Philippines remains steadfast, and these statistics serve as a testament to their dedication to ensuring the safety and security of the nation's citizens," the PNP said in a Facebook post.

The PNP encourages the public's continued cooperation in reporting crimes and providing information that can aid in the prevention and resolution of criminal activities.
