The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) on Wednesday, March 13, called the Philippines a “gold medalist” in teenage pregnancy cases.

Acting CPD Knowledge Management and Communication Division chief Mylin Mirasol Quiray expressed her worries over the significant increase in teenage pregnancies.

“We see that the Philippines is a gold medalist in teen pregnancy cases. Isa tayo sa mga pinakamataas,” Quiray said.

“Nakakalungkot man isipin pero ganyan ang reality na nangyayari sa ngayon lalo na sa very young adolescents aged 10 to 14,” she added, urging parents to teach their children about sexuality and avoid using other terminology to describe sex organs.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that live teenage births reached 150,000 in 2022.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte earlier sounded the alarm with teenage pregnancies, tagging it a national priority.

He signed Executive Order No. 141 in a bid to address the root cause of teenage pregnancies and create interventions to prevent adolescent pregnancies.
