On Friday, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) presented two arrested suspects to the media for the abduction and killing of a mother and her son in June this year.

The arrest was a result of the NBI-Homicide Division’s (HD) relentless manhunt, rescue, and follow-up operations following the victims’ deaths. According to the NBI-HD, the two suspects were responsible for shooting Christian Ortego, 40, to death.

Operatives verified the identity of the individuals as Raymond David Reyes, a former person deprived of liberty (PDL), and Correction Officer I Pio Jonathan Eulalio. Following the shooting of Ortega, the suspects then abducted and killed the victim’s mother Gloria Ortega, 70.

Her remains were recovered beside a dump site in Laguna and were positively identified through DNA analysis. Furthermore, the two identified Vergel Olanda, an employee of the victims, as their conspirator.

Upon investigation, operatives pieced together the timeline of their motives following Olanda’s proposal to commit the robbery and eventual kidnapping of the victims.

NBI Director Judge Jaime B. Santiago said that the victims were onboard a white van in Quezon City when the suspects blocked their way. Christian reversed the maneuver but was unfortunately shot to death.

Subsequently, the assailants abducted and robbed Gloria, and hurriedly left the scene of the crime.

After taking P100,000 from the victims, the subjects demanded ransom money worth P5,000,000 for Gloria’s release. However, the subjects grew restless and eventually decided to kill Gloria and dispose of her body instead.

Succeeding the suspects’ arrest, the NBI brought them for inquest proceedings before the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal charges of robbery with homicide and kidnapping for ransom with homicide.
