The House of Representatives assured that it would continue to monitor the price of agricultural products such as rice, onions, and others.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez made the statement while commending the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for filing charges against those involved in onion price manipulation that reached P700 per kilo in late 2022.
Earlier, Romualdez tasked the House Committee on Agriculture and Food to probe the sudden increase in the price of onions last year.
According to him, the filing of criminal and administrative charges against those involved is also based on the results of the House Committee’s investigation.
After the investigation, it was determined that the members of the cartel were responsible for the increase in the price of onions.
While in the middle of the said investigation, the price of onions has dropped to P160 per kilo from its earlier price of P700 per kilo.
Romualdez then called the DOJ and NBI to go after the other officials involved in price manipulation, not only on onions but also on rice and other agricultural products.
