Congress open for consultations with different sectors on death penalty
by Daylight Abas08 October 2023

The House of Representatives and the Senate will be open to consultation with various sectors on the proposal to restore the death penalty in the country.

In an interview with Milky Rigonan during DZRH’s Isyung Pambayan, Congressman Robert Ace Barbers, the Chairman of the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, believes that it is time to discuss the restoration of the death penalty due to the chronic illegal drug problem.

“Pinag-uusapan kung gaano ka-grabe yung krimen na dala ng droga sa bansa. Ating pinanukala na kailangang ibalik ang death penalty for all drug offenders,” he said

A total of P3.6 billion worth of shabu was discovered recently in Pampanga, in addition to the other tons of drugs discovered during drug operations.

Barbers admitted that if Malacañang has a position on bringing back the death penalty in the Philippines, it would be a huge advantage for the bill to be immediately approved.

“Marami ring nagrequest na mga kasamahan sa Kongreso kung bakit focus lang sa drugs, dapat isama na rin ang heinous crimes. Kasi ang ibang nagcommit ng heinous crimes, ay under the influence of drugs,” he continued.

When it comes to the Catholic Church, Barbers said that convincing them will not be easy. But the solon still hopes to have it open because the bill has no other objectives but to address the increasing illegal problem in the country.
