Brgy. Ginebra head coach Tim Cone still has qualms regarding the four-point shot in the PBA.
While Cone admitted that his team benefitted from the introduction of the four-point line, Cone feels that the focus on other aspects of the game, including playing defense and passing, diminished.
"I believe that the game has evolved into shooting, taking quick shots, taking four-points," Cone said during a press conference after Ginebra won against the San Miguel Beer, 122-105, in Game One of the 2024 PBA Governors Cup semifinals.
"Just my personal opinion, I think we are putting the pressure on young kids to come out and just shoot, learn to shoot and that is good enough. I think the game is more than that," he added.
During the game on Wednesday, October 9, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City, Justin Brownlee, the resident import of the Gin Kings, finished with 33 points after he buried five four-point baskets.
"Just because it favors our team, having Justin around and making those four (pointers), doesn't mean I am a fan of the four-point line," Cone stressed.
Cone, however, will not stop his team from practicing, and shooting from the four-point line.
Aside from Brownlee, the two-time PBA Grand Slam coach mentioned that Ginebra has three to four players who can hit a shot from the four-point arc.
"If it is out there, we are going to use it as a weapon but that doesn't mean that I necesarilly agree with the implementation," remarked Cone.
At the start of the PBA Governors Cup, PBA introduced a four-point arc, located 27 meters away from the basket.
