The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) plans to tighten regulations on the carrying of firearms during election periods.
In an ambush interview at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Headquarters on Monday, COMELEC Chairman George Garcia stated they are set to release a new resolution on the matter.
The move is intended to ensure that gun ban violators and those involved in the illegal possession of loose firearms cannot evade the law.
“Tungkol naman sa isyu ng mga violation ng gun ban, the COMELEC will issue a necessary resolution corrective measures in order na hindi makakaligtas ang mga nahuhuli sa gun ban o ang pagdadala ng mga loose firearms," said Garcia.
As per the latest update from the National Election Monitoring Center, almost 1,400 arrests have been made in connection with violations of the election gun ban.
Furthermore, the PNP has managed to seize 1,422 firearms from both joint police operations and COMELEC checkpoints.
