The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has summoned the “It’s Showtime” contestant for a guided tour at their office, citing the importance of voters’ education.
In a Viber message to reporters on Monday, COMELEC Chairman George Garcia said they have invited the “Sexy Babe” contestant, Heart Aquino, to their headquarters on Tuesday.
“Ininvite ko po siya tomorrow sa Comelec. She will be coming from Pampanga,” Garcia said in a message, adding that Aquino will arrive in the afternoon.
Garcia furthered, stating they “fully understand” the noontime show contestant, as most Filipinos remain uneducated on politics and voting.
He continued, “It is our solemn duty to explain who we are and what we are doing.”
The Comelec chairman said if Aquino would be informed, then they could do the same for others. He added, “Voters education is the key.”
Aquino appeared as the “Sexy Babe” number two contestant last Friday, February 28, during the noontime show segment’s weekly finals. After stating her lack of knowledge about COMELEC, Vice Ganda expressed that it was “bothersome.”
The 20-year-old weekly finalist mentioned she has not voted yet, prompting the “It’s Showtime” hosts to give the Aquino a brief understanding of what COMELEC is and what role it plays during the election period.
The moment was clipped by several users on social media, prompting discussions on the country’s learning crisis and gaps. Numerous people have also expressed their concern for Aquino’s unfamiliarity with the government agency.
Meanwhile, Garcia said it was their shortcoming for failing to give the public a better understanding of the importance of voters’ education.
“It is our failure. We have to immediately rectify,” he ended.
During the TownHall exclusive interview in 2024, Garcia said they would prioritize enhanced voting experience and transparency for the upcoming elections.
