The Commission on Election (Comelec) has yet to come up with a decision regarding the recommendation to postpone the Barangay and Sangguinang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) in Negros Oriental, its Chairman George Garcia said on Monday.
In an interview with the reporters, Garcia said they would still need to conduct a hearing in every Barangay in the province to learn about the sentiments of the residents.
"Aabutin siguro kami ng isang buong buwan ng Hunyo para gawin 'yung proseso ng consulation," he added.
Garcia said they also have yet to talk with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) on the proposed deferment.
The poll body chairman noted that they already declared to Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs their support for "any initiative" that pushes for a peaceful and credible BSKE poll in Negros Oriental.
Last April, Senator Francis 'Tol' Tolentino suggested the postponement of the BSKE in Negros Oriental amid reports of threats and violence in the province after the brazen killing of the late former Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and 10 other civilians.
Tolentino earlier noted that if the poll will be pursued, violence in the province may increase.
"Kasi Barangay po iyan, mas mainit po 'yan, Mr. Chairman. Ayun 'yung lumalaro sa isip ko pero imbitahan natin ang COMELEC chairman next hearing para sa kaniyang opinion," the Senator added.
