The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has reported a significant rise in the number of individuals violating the gun ban imposed for the midterm elections.

On the third day of the gun ban's implementation, the number of reported violations increased by 71, adding to the 80 previously recorded by the Comelec.

The Comelec expressed disappointment over the growing number of violations and announced plans to strengthen police checkpoints to apprehend anyone carrying any type of weapon.

In a statement, Comelec clarified that replicas of firearms are included in the gun ban throughout the election period.

Comelec spokesperson Atty. John Rex Laudiangco emphasized that the gun ban encompasses airsoft guns, airguns, imitation firearms, and replicas, all of which will be confiscated at checkpoints.

The Comelec also reminded police and military personnel that they are no longer exempt from the gun ban if they are off-duty.

In response to the rising violations, the Comelec is urging the public to comply with the regulations to maintain order and peace during the election period. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and will take necessary actions to ensure a safe electoral process.
