Residents of the ten EMBO (Enlisted Men's Barrio) barangays in Taguig City will still be able to vote for a congressman, in accordance with a Senate resolution, according to the COMELEC.
In a statement to DZRH, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Chairman Atty. George Erwin Garcia explained that they will recognize the passed concurrent resolution of the Senate.
“Kahapon ay aming inaksyunan kaagad, inadapt namin sa isang resolusyon sinasabi naming na ‘entitled’ na o ididistribute ‘yung tig-limang barangay sa bawat Distrito at therefore entitled sa tig-labing dalawa na konsehal ang bawat distrito,” Garcia said in an exclusive interview with DZRH for Dos Por Dos on Thursday.
The resolution in question has sparked a dispute between Senators Alan Peter Cayetano and Migz Zubiri, which reportedly almost turned into a physical altercation on Tuesday night.
According to the approved concurrent resolution, the ten EMBO barangays are now included in the legislative districts of Taguig, ensuring that they will still have representation in Congress.
The House of Representatives has also adopted the same resolution, and the COMELEC is currently awaiting its transmission.
In this regard, residents of the EMBO barangays will also be allowed to run for congressman, unless a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) is issued by the court.
