The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Task Force on Safeguarding Against Fear & Exclusion in Elections (Task Force SAFE) released a letter addressed to vlogger and Third District of Manila City Councilor candidate Esther Margaux “Mocha” J. Uson, expressing concern over “sexually suggestive elements” in her “cookie” campaign jingle.

In a letter penned by Task Force SAFE head Director Sonia Wee-Lozada, Comelec highlighted the agency’s reservations about the sexually suggestive elements found in some of Uson’s campaign content, urging her to uphold the integrity of political discourse and avoid materials that border on obscenity.

“We hope this letter finds you well. This is to express our concern regarding the tone and content of some of the materials associated with your political campaign,” the letter began.

Moreover, the letter acknowledges that political campaigns often strive to attract attention but stresses the importance of direct and respectful communication with the public particularly to voters.

“Puns and double meanings may be used as literary devices in campaigns, but we hope that these are used not to distract from your political platform or skirt the line between accepted speech and obscenity, as we are in the context of elections.”

COMELEC’s Task Force SAFE emphasized that while sexually positive themes are not inherently inappropriate, Uson’s presentation may undermine serious political discussions.

“Sexually suggestive elements in your campaign can detract from the serious discussions we need to have about policy, governance, and the future of our communities,” the letter continued.

Moreover, the message recently conveyed suggested that while campaign platforms centered on sexually positive themes shouldn't be dismissed outright, candidates are encouraged to pursue such messaging with more intentionality and sensitivity—particularly “in a more deliberate manner with proper regard for age-appropriateness.”

COMELEC’s letter concluded with a call for self-reflection and responsibility in campaign messaging: “We trust that you will reflect on the impact of your current campaign approach and make choices that elevate political participation and discourse.”

The House Committee on Women and Gender Equality Chairperson and Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman has already called out Uson, explaining that gender should not be used as a gimmick.

Uson, known for her past as a performer and social media personality, has often drawn controversy for her provocative style, even while holding various government posts under former President Rodrigo Duterte's administration.
