The Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued show cause orders against at least 91 candidates for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) for allegations of early campaigning.
In a radio interview, Comelec Chairman George Garcia said that the show cause order was based on the complaints they received, in which their office conducted an investigation—the Comelec’s own initiatives.
Garcia said that upon receiving the said show cause order, the BSKE 2023 bets will need to explain their sides regarding the allegations of premature campaigning.
He added that the poll body has the power to probe and file complaints against the candidates who violated the BSKE 2023 rules and that their office has repeatedly warned against early campaigning, which should begin from October 19 to October 28.
Moreover, Garcia mentioned that the 91 BSKE candidates are not yet the final number of election violators, as they will continuously check on them on a daily basis.
Voters are encouraged to file complaints once they see a BSKE candidate who makes offenses against the election rules before the official campaign period starts.
The BSKE 2023 will be held on October 30.
