Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia on Wednesday encouraged Congress to let voters re-register to build a more accurate list for the 2028 elections during the Updates on Political Party Institutionalization and the 2025 National and Local Elections conference.
Garcia wanted to annul the list of voters in the country and conduct a one-month general re-registration of voters in 2026, convincing the Congress, Senate, and House.
He added that re-registration would let them know the accuracy of the 68 million voters in the country.
According to Garcia, there is a need for a new voter’s list after the Comelec recently discovered a total of 491, 000 multiple registrants through the automated fingerprint identification system.
He also noted that the oldest recorded fingerprint was back in 2023.
Meanwhile, Garcia suggested that Congress procure a new biometrics system prior to conducting the special re-registration of voters.
