As Gilas Pilipinas exits the 2023 FIBA World Cup, Coach Chot Reyes also announced his departure from the national team.
The 59-year old coach made the decision amidst the criticisms that he received, and calls for his resignation due to the four straight losses of the Philippines in the tournament.
"I signed up to do a job and we did not deliver," Reyes said on Saturday, September 2, during a press conference.
"I think it is time to step aside and allow the (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas) to make a decision for the good of the team and the program," he added.
Reyes described his World Cup experience as 'brutal' for both him and his family.
"Never mind on me, but on my family, and my loved ones, it is just brutal. I will never turn my back on serving my country but there is a point where I have just to think of my health and my family," he stressed.
Reyes also hinted that he might refuse taking the helm of the national team if the SBP once again offers the position to him.
"And subject myself to this again, maawa naman kayo sa akin," Reyes said.
So far, SBP has yet to make a statement on the announcement of Reyes.
The Filipinos managed to salavage their campaign in the World Cup with a 96-75 victory against China on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
