MANILA – The City of Manila is planning to declare August 4 as Carlos Yulo Day, as a way to commemorate the double-gold medal victory of the Filipino gymnast at the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024.

In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna said that the City Council is seriously considering the proposal.

“Yun po ang pinag-usapan natin, so hinihikayat po natin ang Konseho ng Maynila, dahil yung pong araw na unang nagwagi ang gintong medalya po [si] Carlos Yulo, yun po ay pinag-uusapan po ng Konseho ng Maynila, sa pamununo po ni Vice Mayor Yul Servo,” Mayor Lacuna said.

Yulo, 24, clinched his first gold medal on Saturday, August 3, and his second on Sunday, August 4.

When asked if this was already filed, Lacuna said that it will be fast, as they can file the resolution within a day.

“Madali naman po. Yung resolution lang naman po yan. Dahil po isang araw, pwede po na yan gawin,” Lacuna added.

Meantime, Lacuna clarified that Carlos Yulo Day will not be a non-working holiday, but will be the city’s way of commemorating the honor and pride a “son of Manila” has given the city and the country.

“It's just a commemoration po sa pagbibigay ng karangalan ng isang anak ng Maynila sa ating lungsod at sa bansa,” the City Mayor stated.

The gold medalist from Leveriza Street, Malate, City of Manila, is set to receive PHP10 million from the Philippine Sports Commission, under Republic Act 10699 or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.

The gymnast is also set to receive PHP 6 million from the House of Representatives.

On Wednesday, a fully-furnished three-bedroom condominium unit worth PHP24 million located in McKinley was turned over to Yulo from real-estate developer Megaworld, and other pledges of free lifetime food, supplies, and services from private businesses and companies.

In the afternoon, a motorcade was scheduled to welcome home Yulo and other Olympians, which started from Aliw Theatre in Pasay City to Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila, with a culminating program attended by a full-capacity audience inside the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
