The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Friday, July 21, said it is hopeful of the promise of the Philippine National Police (PNP) that they will be implementing maximum tolerance for the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
“It is important for the State to facilitate and provide a space for the exercise of peaceful assembly as this will also demonstrate responsive governance that sincerely listens and engages with diverse groups toward social good," the CHR said in a statement.
"We are hopeful that the PNP's statement of assurance will translate to efforts by State forces to protect and facilitate the right to peaceful protest in the same manner that they will endeavor to ensure peace and order," it added.
According to CHR, SONA serves as an opportunity for many groups and individuals to express their views, stances, and grievances on important national issues.
In order to prevent any unforeseen situations, the CHR also promised to keep an eye on the protests on Monday.
The CHR also reminded protesters to obtain licenses and hold peaceful demonstrations in accordance with the rules in order to stage their events on Monday.
The PNP stated on Thursday that they will show the greatest amount of tolerance for protesters taking part in any rallies during the SONA.
Thousands of demonstrators and representatives from 50 organizations are expected to participate in this year's SONA demonstrations, according to the progressive group Bayan.
