In a press statement released on Monday, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) decried the death of the 19-year-old Maritime academy cadet in Calamba, Laguna due to the severity of the physical punishment imposed by his upperclassmen.
According to the CHR, such practices solely jeopardizes the student’s well-being, resulting in the violation of their dignity and rights.
“The Commission unequivocally denounces any form of violence against students, this incident represents a blatant violation of a student’s fundamental right to life and safety. Severe physical punishments have no place in any educational institution,” CHR Chairperson Richard P. Palpal-latoc expressed.
A Different Course of Action
Investigation found that the incident occurred when Cadet Vince Delos Reyes accidentally sent a “thumbs up” in the cadet corps group chat. The action reportedly displeased the senior, prompting him to perform strenuous exercises, a consequence for the said “offense”.
While doing the exercises, Delos Reyes had difficulty breathing, causing him to collapse and be taken to the nearest infirmary. He was then ordered to be transferred to a hospital, but was unfortunately declared dead on arrival.
Consequences
The suspect was immediately arrested and turned over to the Calamba City Police Station.
Subsequently, the CHR calls for a thorough investigation on the unfortunate incident. They urge authorities to ensure justice for the victim’s family.
The CHR has also conducted its own investigation through its regional office in Region IV.
“The CHR remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all individuals, especially students, and calls for accountability and justice in this tragic case,” the CHR concluded.
