The Chinese Embassy in Manila has issued a strongly worded response to Senator Risa Hontiveros after she described the embassy as a “bad guest” in the Philippines and called on it to show greater respect for its host country.

Hontiveros’ remark, posted on Facebook, came amid heightened tensions and public debate over China-related issues affecting the Philippines.

In response, the Chinese Embassy shared the senator’s post on its official Facebook page and released a statement asserting its role as a bridge for friendship and cooperation between the two countries, while also serving as a defender of China’s national interests and dignity.

The embassy said it strongly opposes what it described as groundless attacks, smears, and the spread of fake news against China. It stressed that it will not remain silent when China is defamed or when hatred is incited, adding that responding firmly to such statements is both its duty and a legitimate right.

The statement also criticized what it called a double standard, where criticism against China is tolerated but its responses are labeled as interference in internal affairs or disrespect.

The embassy said branding China as a “bad guest” reflects hypocrisy and a lack of basic courtesy and warned that it will continue to push back against accusations it considers unfounded.
