The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Tuesday announced that it is set to launch the first-ever 2023 Philippine Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) games where ROTC cadets will compete in Olympic-level and NSA-sanctioned sporting events.

CHED has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with its partners the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), and Senator Francis ‘Tol’ Tolentino at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City.

In a press release, CHED said the 2023 ROTC games will be composed of athletics, swimming, boxing, arnis, weightlifting, kickboxing, e-sports, basketball, volleyball, target shooting, and demonstration sports.

CHED deemed the program as a “good initiative” for the impending bill seeking to revive the mandatory ROTC in higher education.

“ROTC is not just mobilizing young Filipinos during times of peace and war, but it also needs to produce physically fit and healthy individuals. CHED under my watch will ensure the fulfillment of our mandate, making sports one of our priority programs to promote total human development geared towards good citizenry and the honing of world-class Filipinos,” CHED Chairman Popoy De Vera said.

According to the Commission, the recruitment and sports clinic will begin in February 2023 while the Regional ROTC games will be in July and the National ROTC games in September.
