The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) lauded the entry of 10 higher education institutions (HEIs) in the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) list that was released on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
In a statement, CHED chairman Chairman Popoy De Vera said the increase in the number of Philippine universities on the list demonstrated that they “continuously benchmark themselves with the best universities in the world and are improving their programs, faculty, and facilities to produce graduates that are globally competitive and industry-matched."
The newly released rankings revealed that out of 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) topped 301-400.
CHED said Ateneo’s ranking was considered the highest ranking ever received by any Philippine university in THE WUR list.
The University of the Philippines (UP) ranked 801-1000, followed by De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila at 1201-1500 ranking, and Mapua University at 1501 plus.
State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) that also got in the ranking list under “reporter” status are as follows: Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, Tarlac Agricultural University, University of Santo Tomas, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines and Visayas State University.
“The latest ranking is critical to achieve the directive of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. that Philippine HEIs must produce industry-ready graduates for the local and international employment market,” De Vera said.
In a statement posted on its website, THE WUR said the list covers 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution in four areas such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
It also said that it analyzed over “121 million citations across more than 15.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 40,000 scholars globally.”
Alongside, it collected over “680,000 data points from more than 2,500 institutions that submitted data.”
