In two separate encounters, the China Coast Guard (CCG) targeted a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel with a water cannon and collided with a People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA) warship while in hot pursuit of the same PCG vessel at the Bajo de Masinloc.

In a post on Monday, PCG Spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Jay Tarriela said the PCG carried out a Kadiwa Para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda (KBBM) initiative, deploying the BRP Teresa Magbanua (MRRV 9701), BRP Suluan (MRRV 4406), and MV Pamamalakaya after spotting 35 Filipino fishing vessels in Scarborough Shoal.

“During the operation, Philippine vessels and fishermen encountered hazardous maneuvers and blocking actions from other vessels in the vicinity,” Tarriela said.

Moreover, the BRP Suluan was attacked with a water cannon. However, its crew members managed to evade the blasts.

In another incident, a CCG vessel crashed into a PLA Navy ship while tailing BRP Suluan. The Chinese vessel sustained considerable damages.

“The CCG 3104, which was chasing the BRP Suluan at high speed, performed a risky maneuver from the PCG vessel's starboard quarter, leading to the impact with the PLA Navy warship. This resulted in substantial damage to the CCG vessel's forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy,” Tarriela recounted.

The PCG promptly came to the aid of CCG crew members who had fallen overboard and were in need of medical attention. Meanwhile, the BRP Teresa Magbanua escorted the Filipinos fishermen out of harm’s way and provided them with fuel and supplies.

On August 8, the PCG confirmed the recovery of what is believed to be an underwater drone in Bolinao, Pangasinan. Two days before, fishermen spotted the “floating orange object” around 149 nautical miles northwest off Bolinao.
