Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla aired his opposition against the possible proposal of banning Korean drama in the Philippines.
“The people should be given the freedom to choose which entertainment content they want. Hindi kailangan ng ban. Ang kailangan buksan ng malawak ang pag-iisip,” Remulla said in a Twitter post on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
He recounted that during the height of the pandemic when everyone was advised to stay at home, K-dramas and Korean pop (Kpop) gave “hope and inspiration” to many Filipinos.
Admitting that he is among the many Caviteño who are K-pop and K-dramas drama fans, he said these two entertainment fields “strike a chord in the Filipino heart.”
Apart from this, Remulla noted that Koreans are among the top tourists in the country.
“They love our country while we love them for their world-class entertainment,” he added.
The Cavite Governor emphasized that “there are no boundaries in pop culture.”
He encouraged Filipinos to “learn” and "take inspiration” from the accomplishments of Koreans.
Remulla also expressed his confidence that the country could also achieve those triumphs.
On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Senator Jinggoy Estrada floated the idea of proposing a ban on Korean telenovelas in the country and recommended focusing only on the airing of local telenovelas.
He reasoned that many local celebrities might lose their jobs and profits as many Filipinos prefer to watch K-dramas instead.
Estrada also said he was concerned that there was a “lack of support“ for the local industry but many were “too eager and willing to celebrate South Korea’s entertainment industry.”
