President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has signed into law the measure that converts the municipality of Carmona into a component city of Cavite province.
Republic Act No. 11938 was signed by Marcos, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on February 23.
The Municipality of Carmona shall now conduct a plebiscite where citizens will vote "yes" or "no" on the conversion of the municipal to a city within 60 days of the Act's approval.
"The Commission on Elections shall conduct and supervise each plebiscite. The expenses for such a plebiscite shall be borne by the Municipality of Carmona," the law stated.
Once ratified in the said plebiscite, Carmona will become the eighth city of Cavite after Cavite City, Trece Martines, Tagaytay, Dasmariñas, Bacoor, Imus, and General Trias.
In September last year, the House of Representatives passed a measure seeking for the cityhood of Carmona, Cavite.
The bill got approved in the Senate last January.
Carmona is regarded as the current first-class urban area in Cavite.
In 2021, the Commission on Audit reported that Carmona was the richest municipality in the country, with Php 6.212 billion in total assets.
