National Security Adviser (NSA) Dr. Clarita Reyes Carlos advised President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to speak up that the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan is a threat to regional security.
“If I were to advise the President, it would be to articulate what other countries articulated that we are deeply concerned about how this visit in fact had risen the temperature in our regional security architecture and sana bababaan natin ang temperatura na 'to at sana these two superpowers would really have a more cooperative relationship,” she said in an interview with Gerry Baja and Anthony during DZRH’s Dos Por Dos on Monday, Aug. 4.
Carlos said countries like Singapore, Japan, and South Korea have already released a statement that Pelosi’s visit threatens their regional security architecture.
She also said that President Marcos needs a “delicate balancing” between “two hegemons”, referring to America and China.
The National Security Adviser asserted that war is unlikely to escalate between the US and China, but Taiwan would face many economic sanctions from China.
“It is less likely, it is unlikely [na mag-escalate ang tensyon sa US-China]. Pero nakakalungkot nito, ang Taiwan ang magbabayad niyan kasi ngayon pa lang, hinarang na ni China ang natural sand na ine-export niya sa Taiwan. Remember, ang Taiwan ang biggest producer ng semiconductor. Ang natural sand kasi ‘yan ang component na pag produce ng semiconductors. Tapos hindi lang iyan ang hinarang niya, ang dami niyang hinarang na ineexport ng Taiwan sa kaniya,” she explained.
“China is using the economic card and pipilayan niya talaga ang Taiwan. Pagbabayarin nila ang Taiwan sa ginawa nilang pagsang ayon na lumapag si Pelosi duon for a few hours,” Carlos added.
US House Speaker Pelosi arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday, defying warnings from China.
China has geared up for a series of military drills in Taiwan’s territorial seas after the House Speaker left the island on Wednesday morning.
