Filipino boxer Carlo Paalam moves closer to a podium finish in the 2024 Paris Olympics after securing a ticket to the quarterfinals of the men’s 57kg division after his unanimous victory in the round of 16 against Irish foe Jude Gallagher on Wednesday (Manila time).

The PH bet showcased his scorching punches and excellent footwork despite the height advantage of his opponent, scoring a solid 29-30-29-29-29.

The experienced Pinoy boxer exhibited his strategic prowess in the match eventually getting the upper hand in the first round.

Ireland's Gallagher managed to display an aggressive tone with his moves, carefully calculating the next punch hoping to put the opponent at rest.

Despite Gallagher's effort, Paalam emerged dominant gaining three nods from the five judges.

Paalam is determined to add another Olympic medal to his record after clinching a silver in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

A win in the quarterfinal round may guarantee at least a bronze medal in the competition.

Paalam will be back in action on August 3 (Manila time) against Australia's Charlie Senior, in hopes of snatching a spot in the semifinals.

Previously, fellow Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Nesthy Petacio advanced to the round of 16 in the women's 57kg division.

Petecio and Paalam joined Aira Villegas who snatched the first win in the boxing competition for the Philippine team in the Paris Olympics.
