Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been named titular bishop of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano, a role formerly held by newly elected Pope Leo XIV.
"The Holy Father has assigned the Title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano to His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Section for First Evangelization and the new particular Churches," the Vatican announced on Saturday.
Albano is one of the seven suburbicarian dioceses near Rome reserved for cardinal bishops, the highest-ranking members of the College of Cardinals.
Tagle had previously been serving as cardinal bishop without a specific titular see after being elevated to the rank in 2022.
The appointment comes just a week after Tagle took part in the conclave that elected Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, following the death of Pope Francis.
During the May 18 papal inauguration, Tagle also had the honor of placing the Ring of the Fisherman on the new pontiff’s finger—a traditional symbol of papal authority tracing back to St. Peter.
Tagle's new assignment further cements his influential standing in the Vatican, where he continues to serve as a key figure in global evangelization efforts.
