Classes from primary to tertiary levels in public and private schools in Caloocan City are suspended from January 17 to 22, according to Mayor Oca Malapitan.
Malapitan, in his Executive Order No. 002-2022, cited in his decision the all-time high cases of COVID-19 infections recorded over the past week.
"There exists a palpable, recognizable, and urgent need to ease the physical and mental strain of the pandemic on the students, parents, teachers, and school personnel in Caloocan City," the order read.
According to the order, classes will only resume on a "purely asynchronous capacity from 24 to 29 January 2022."
While suspended, the order said physical reporting by teachers and other personnel shall not be required by heads of schools unless otherwise "necessitated by extraordinary circumstances."
It added that all primary and secondary public schools should refer to the memorandum no. 17 of the Department of Education National Capital Region (DepEd NCR) regarding to the revisions in the academic calendar.
For tertiary schools, however, adjustment of the academic calendar will be left to their discretion depending on their own determination on the pandemic's impact to their students.
The order is also in accordance to the DepEd NCR Memorandum No. 17, which suspended classes in public schools until January 22 amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases.
