The town of Calaca was declared as the City of Batangas after the majority of the citizens voted to convert the municipality, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Sunday, Sept. 4.

In a press statement, Comelec Acting Spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said 29,424 individuals voted in favor and 3,781 individuals voted against the ratification of the municipal's conversion during a plebiscite held on Saturday, Sept. 3.

He said 33,205 out of the 58,881 registered voters from 40 barangays in 37 voting centers participated in the election, a high plebiscite turnout despite the bad weather condition brought by Typhoon Henry over the weekend.

The ratification of Calaca as City was in accordance with Republic Act No. 11544 in “An Act converting the Municipality of Calaca in the Province of Batangas into a component City to be known as The City of Calaca“ signed by former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte in May 26, 2021.

Calaca is the fifth City in Batangas after Lipa City, Batangas City, Tanauan City, and Santo Tomas City.

The City has a total population of 87,361.
