The Commission on Appointments (CA) approved and finalized on Wednesday the appointment of Sonny Angara as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).
Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative Luis Raymund Villafuerte moved to skip the formal procedure of having Angara deliver his opening statement as a gesture to give courtesy towards the former senator, to which no objections were manifested.
The CA panel members did not pose any inquiries regarding Angara's nomination for the post.
Shortly, Angara's appointment received a unanimous decision from the panel during the plenary session.
Senator Raffy Tulfo, who heads the CA's panel on education, mentioned the significant role of DepEd in shaping an individual. He also mentioned the President's decision to appoint the appropriate individual to the position.
"We were all shaped and groomed by the DepEd of our times. Which is why I took this duty very seriously because the person who will take on the leadership of the DepEd will make decisions that will determine our country’s future,” Tulfo said during the session.
Former colleagues in the Senate expressed their support for the new education chief, and even before the President's formal appointment, senators have been continuously manifesting their support.
In a Facebook post, Angara took his time to express his gratitude towards Senators Chiz Escudero, and Raffy Tulfo, and to the members of the Commission on Appointments.
"Thank you to Senate President Chiz Escudero, Education Committee Chairman Senator Raffy Tulfo in Action, and the members of the Commission on Appointments," said Angara.
Angara replaced Vice President Sara Duterte who resigned on June 19. He assumed office on July 19.
