Aleson Shippine Line Inc., the owner of a burned ferry off the coast of Basilan, has apologized for the incident that resulted in the loss of over 29 people.
The M/V Mary Joy 3 plying Jolo, Sulu, carrying 225 passengers and 35 crew members, caught fire in waters off Baluk-Baluk Island, Hadji Muhtamad, Basilan on Wednesday evening.
"There are no words to describe the pain of losing a loved one and our hearts go out to the families, friends, and relatives whom they left behind. We cannot apologize enough and we are profoundly sorry for the misery this incident has caused many of us," the shipping firm said.
In the 47 years of operations, the company claimed to not experience a tragedy like such.
They also expressed gratitude to Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, and other local officials and civilians for helping and responding during the crucial hours.
"As we continue to cooperate with the authorities in investigating the real cause of the fire, we sincerely offer our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved and prayers for the dear departed. We have given out financial assistance to those in need and affected in the meantime," it added.
Based on the reports, a total number, of 11 individuals died after getting drowned in the sea while 18 others were burned to death. At least 20 injured individuals were brought to the hospital in Basilan and in Zamboanga.
