Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) who has been on death row in Indonesia since 2010, will be taken directly to the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) upon her arrival in the Philippines tomorrow.
According to Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr., Veloso will undergo a five-day mandatory quarantine, followed by 55 days of orientation, diagnostic evaluation, and initial security classification, in accordance with their manual on the admission and confinement of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
The 39-year-old Filipina will be placed in a regular quarantine cell for medical and physical examinations to determine if she has any underlying health issues.
Veloso will also undergo an interview with the CIW Overseer to gather details about her registration and to compile a list of her relatives and authorized visitors.
Catapang stated that once Veloso's quarantine period concludes on December 24, her immediate family will be permitted to visit her just in time for Christmas.
The BuCor Chief assured that Veloso will be housed in a separate cell from her alleged illegal recruiter, Cristina Sergio, who is also detained at the same facility.
Veloso is expected to return to the Philippines from Indonesia at 6 a.m. tomorrow, after spending 14 years in detention following her arrest in 2010.
She was arrested by Indonesian authorities in Yogyakarta after 2.6 kilograms of heroin were discovered in her suitcase, which led to her being placed on death row for drug trafficking charges.
On November 20, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that Veloso would be returning to the Philippines after more than a decade of negotiations and appeals to Indonesia.
