The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Friday morning buried 60 out of the 176 unclaimed corpses of the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who all died inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
These cadavers were earlier found by authorities at the Eastern Funeral Homes in Muntinlupa during the investigation on the slay case of radio broadcaster Percival "Percy Lapid" Mabasa.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin ‘Boying’ Remulla earlier pronounced that 120 of the 176 unclaimed cadavers would be transferred to the Philippine General Hospital for an autopsy to find out their cause of deaths.
But the 60 cadavers buried today did not undergo autopsy as the majority of them are “mummified” or had dried already, according to a report by RH Christian Maño.
The inmates’ bodies were placed individually in wooden boxes with their names attached.
A funeral mass was conducted at the NBP Prison Cemetery before the bodies of deceased inmates were laid to rest.
BuCor acting Director General Gregorio Catapang also announced that another batch of cadavers is set to be burried next week.
