The conservatorship that has controlled the life of Britney Spears for 13 years neared a possible end on Wednesday after a judge suspended her father, and the pop super-star said later that she was "on cloud 9 right now." Gloria Tso reports.

#FreeBritney fans gathered outside a Los Angeles court on Wednesday erupted in cheers as they heard the judge's ruling: Britney Spears' father is out.

Following the ruling Spears wrote on Instagram that she was quote "on cloud nine."

Los Angeles Superior Court judge Brenda Penny on Wednesday suspended Jamie Spears from his daughter's conservatorship - a legal arrangement that has controlled the singer's business affairs and personal life for 13 years.

Penny said the current situation is not tenable, and reflects a - quote - "toxic environment," adding that Spears' father will be temporarily replaced with an accountant.

Spears did not participate in Wednesday's hearing and was represented by attorney Matthew Rosengart, who thanked the singer's fans for their support.

"And I've only been on this matter for a couple of months, but I'm proud to say that we've gotten to know each other very well. And she's so pleased and thankful to all of you."

The 39-year old singer has been demanding for months that her father be removed from any role in her life.

Public support for her has swelled since she testified in June, calling the conservatorship abusive and humiliating.

Spears' father made a surprise request earlier this month to end the conservatorship.

His attorneys argued on Wednesday there was no need for him to step down immediately because all sides had agreed to end the arrangement.

Meanwhile, Spears' lawyer demanded his immediate removal and said he wanted to avoid answering questions about his actions.

A New York Times documentary released last week alleged that the singer's phone and bedroom were bugged by security staff working for her father, who has said his actions were within his authority as conservator.

A follow-up hearing on whether to terminate Spears' conservatorship entirely is set for November 12.
