Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III has accepted the fistfight challenge of Davao City Acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, calling it a “charity boxing match” for the benefit of typhoon victims.
“Tamang-tama, maraming nasalanta ngayon ng bagyo at baha. Maybe we can use this moment and this opportunity to raise funds in a charity boxing match...para mabilis this coming Sunday, sa Araneta,” Torre said in an interview on Wednesday, July 23.
Torre also called on potential sponsors to support the event, even offering them a chance to display their merchandise during each round of the proposed match.
“12 rounds? Pwede… ang suntukan para maganda, para medyo marami-rami ang ma-raise natin, siguro you can find sponsors, per round, may mag-sponsor,” he added.
RH Edniel Parrosa reported on DZRH's Rapido Hataw Balita, the country's top cop said that their 12-round boxing match could be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday at 9 a.m.
This comes after Duterte earlier dared Torre to a fistfight during a July 20 episode of his podcast Basta Dabawenyo, accusing the police chief of being “brave only because of his position.”
“Matapang ka lang naman, you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo, alam ko kaya kita kung ganon lang. You are a coward. You are nothing without your position,” Duterte said.
Instead of brushing off the remark, Torre turned the challenge into what he called an ‘opportunity to help.’
The PNP chief further said that his training for the match is set to begin at Camp Crame starting Thursday morning at 9:00 am.
