Aklan 2nd District Representative Teodorico Haresco Jr. has claimed that negligence by local governments has contributed to the decline of tourism in Boracay, often referred to as the “Jewel of Philippine Tourism.”
According to Haresco, before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kalibo International Airport accommodated up to 30 international and 10 domestic flights daily. However, this number has now dropped to just five international and domestic flights per day, which Haresco sees as evidence of the government’s failure to protect Aklan’s tourism industry.
Haresco also raised concerns about the poor condition of the Caticlan Jetty Port, the main gateway to Boracay.
Despite high terminal and environmental fees, he pointed out that the port allegedly lacks basic facilities, including proper restrooms for passengers.
Additionally, Haresco criticized Aklan’s local government units (LGUs) for not taking action against rampant quarrying and the rising crime incidents in the province. He cited a recent case of a foreign tourist who was raped and murdered, which has instilled fear among potential island visitors.
Haresco emphasized the need for improved infrastructure, including airports and tourist destinations, to meet global standards.
He stressed that without well-maintained roads, efficient airport services, and enhanced security, attracting both local and foreign tourists will remain a challenge.
