Presumptive president Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday announced that he will be appointing his running mate, presumptive vice president Sara Duterte as the chief of the Department of Education (DepEd).
In a televised speech, Marcos Jr. said Duterte-Carpio has already agreed to take on the post.
The tandem has been taking the leads in the partial and unofficial results released by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) with Marcos garnering 31,080,487 votes and Duterte-Carpio with 31,533,999 votes as of May 11, 2:27 PM.
"I think I am already authorized to announce the first nominee that we will be giving to the Commission on Appointments when the time comes should I be proclaimed. And that is that our incoming vice president has agreed to take the brief of the Department of Education,” Marcos Jr. said.
“So si Inday Sara, tinanong ko sa kanya kung kaya niya yung trabaho dahil mahirap ang trabaho ng Secretary of Education. Pero nag-agree naman siya,” he added.
Marcos said Duterte was a mother who wanted her children to be "well-trained and well-educated."
Shortly after, the camp of Duterte-Carpio released a clarification saying d that the vice presidential bet “has not expressed a preference for any cabinet position.”
“We fully recognize that the choosing of cabinet positions is within the discretion of the President,” presumptive Liloan town mayor Christina Frasco, who also serves as Duterte-Carpio’s spokesperson, said in a statement.
Marcos Jr. earlier claimed that Duterte-Carpio wants to head the Department of National Defense (DND) should they win the May 9 local and national elections.
