The Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced that it has obtained the details of an alleged Chinese spy who is accused of carrying out illegal surveillance and espionage activities in several locations in Luzon.
According to BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, a review of their records allowed authorities to retrieve the details of the Chinese national.
The 39-year-old suspect is said to have been traveling to and from the Philippines since 2015 and is reportedly married to a Filipina.
Information obtained by immigration authorities has been shared with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to facilitate the investigation into the case.
Viado stated that the Bureau of Immigration (BI) will commence deportation proceedings against the suspect in addition to the local charges that will be pursued.
However, he clarified that deportation will only be implemented once all local accountabilities and penalties have been resolved and fully served.
The BI Chief assured that the agency would identify any foreign cohorts in the country who may be assisting the suspect.
Following the arrest of the Chinese national and his alleged accomplices, authorities discovered that they were using advanced technology and equipment to collect various data and information on the country's topography.
Multiple images in their possession were also discovered, including photographs of key Philippine military camps, such as Camp Crame, Camp Aguinaldo, and Fort Bonifacio.
The suspects were also reportedly conducting surveillance on airports, local government offices, Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites, and shopping malls.
