The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested nearly 400 illegal aliens in a large-scale raid in Parañaque on January 8, targeting an alleged scam operation.
BI Intelligence Division Chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. reported that the operation uncovered the involvement of the aliens in activities similar to those of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) at a company located in Barangay Tambo.
Additionally, the suspects were believed to be engaged in illegal activities, including running online scam operations targeting victims abroad.
Agents from the Bureau’s Intelligence Division, Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), and Anti-Terrorism Group (ATG) had been closely monitoring the activities of these individuals.
“Their operations were found to be in violation of immigration laws and posed significant risks to the public," said Manahan.
BI Commissioner Joel Viado stated that the raid was part of the government’s intensified efforts to combat illegal activities and ensure that foreign nationals residing in the country comply with the law.
He also emphasized that any activities posing a threat to public safety and welfare will not be tolerated.
In line with an order from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) are set to be shut down by December 2024, with their workers expected to leave the country by that time.
“POGO workers who insist on staying in the country and violating our laws will be arrested and deported,” Viado warned.
Meanwhile, the arrested individuals have undergone booking procedures and will be held in custody by the agency pending deportation proceedings.
