The probe and manhunt operation continues after a South Korean fugitive escaped from Immigration's detention facility in Bicutan, Taguig on Sunday, May 21, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Wednesday.
In a press release, BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said that the 38-year-old Korean identified as Kang Juchun managed to breach the BI facility’s perimeter by climbing its 20-foot fence with barbed wires at around 2 AM.
Tansingco said Kang reportedly took advantage of a blind spot in the facility’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) and climbed the fence and fell on the cemented road.
Kang has been detained in BI’s warden facility and was supposed to be deported from the country, according to Tansingco.
The Korean national was captured by Immigration officers after arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 from Bangkok, Thailand last February 10. BI Commissioner said that he has an Interpol red notice hit for “murder charges and abandonment of a dead body.”
Tangsingco said that the BI has joined forces with local law enforcement agencies and has deployed specialized teams to different locations in order to locate and capture the Korean fugitive immediately.
"This is a serious breach of our facility’s security," he stressed.
The Commissioner added that an intensive investigation to determine lapses has been initiated and that they are taking the steps needed to prevent the recurrence.
Tangsingco said that the agency has started to improve the facility’s security by adding another watch tower and increasing the height of the perimeter fence with barbed wires.
