Ten areas in Western and Central Visayas and Mindanao tested positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

In its Shellfish Bulletin No. 26 dated Nov. 10 but posted on Nov. 12, BFAR said the coastal areas in the following areas are toxic red tide-positive:

  1. Roxas City, Capiz
  2. Panay, Capiz
  3. Saplan Bay, Capiz
  4. Pilar, Capiz
  5. President Roxas, Capiz
  6. Gigantes Islands, Carles, Iloilo
  7. San Benito, Surigao del Norte
  8. Dauis and Tagbilaran City, Bohol
  9. Dumanquillas Bay, Zamboanga del Sur
  10. Lianga Bay, Surigao del Sur

“All types of shellfish and acetes sp. or almang gathered from the areas shown above are NOT SAFE for human consumption,” the agency said.

But BFA noted that fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs from the said aforementioned areas are “safe” for eating, provided that these are “fresh and washed thoroughly” and that the “gills and intestines are removed before cooking.”
