BFAR lifts shellfish ban in three areas

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has lifted the shellfish ban in three areas in Eastern Visayas.

In an advisory on Friday, November 22, BFAR announced that the public can now consume the shellfish coming from Biliran Island in Biliran Province; Cambatutay Bay in Samar; and Carigara Bay in Leyte.

Meanwhile, BFAR warned the public from eating shellfish from the coastal waters of Zumarraga Island, Daram Island, and Irong-Irong Bay of Samar; Leyte in Leyte Province; Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga Del Sur; and Tunagawan in Zamboanga Sibugay.

The agency stressed that the said areas still test positive for paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide.

"All types of shellfish and 𝐴𝑐𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑠𝑝. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are not safe for human consumption," BFAR Eastern Visayas said in an advisory.

"Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are safe from human consumption provided that and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as intestines and gills are removed before cooking," the agency added.
