Former US President Barack Obama congratulated Republican White House contender Donald Trump on his projected landslide victory, despite not seeing “eye to eye on everything.”
“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues,” the Democrat former president said in a statement. “But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out.”
He expressed pride for Vice President Kamala Harris and her running-mate Tim Walz, who were “extraordinary public servants,” and gratefulness for the staff and volunteers who gave their all in supporting them.
He acknowledged the American people have struggled through circumstances which have prevented financial security such as the COVID-19 pandemic and consequent price hikes, hampering democrat officials’ work globally.
Obama assured solutions could be found if people were to hear others out and Americans adhere to “core constitutional principles” and “democratic norms” which have defined the nation.
“In a country as big and diverse as ours, we won’t always see eye-to-eye on everything. But progress requires us to extend good faith and grace—even to people with whom we deeply disagree,” he stated.
“That’s how we’ve come this far, and it’s how we’ll keep building a country that is more fair and more just, more equal and more free,” the former president concluded.
Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States of America, and the country’s first African-American President. He endorsed Democrat candidate Harris, who is also biracial, with Jamaican and Indian roots.
